Chapel of Bones in Évora

May 31, 2016

One of the main attractions of Évora is the gothic Capela Dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones). The chapel is the eerie resting place of hundreds of skeletons exhumed from the city’s graveyards in the 16th century and their bones and skulls line the walls, ceilings, floors and pillars of the chapel.

The choice to build the chapel was for function as well as fashion. The Évora cemeteries were overcrowded in the 16th century so they decided to place the bones of the exhumed bodies in chapels and other places of worship in order to be closer to God.As you enter you’ll see a sign which, translated from Portuguese means ‘we, the bones that are here await yours’, a creepy message from the bones to the visitors giving the chapel an even eerier vibe as if it needed one.It is one of the strangest sights in Portugal and if you’re thinking about visiting Évora, the Chapel of Bones is unmissable.
