Amsterdam not only has the world’s first floating cat sanctuary but a floating flower market too. What is it about this city and floating things? Bloemenmarkt was founded in 1862 and has 15 unique florists along Amsterdam’s southern canal belt. Together they make up a colourful display that is busy and bustling with both locals and tourists. What makes the flower market so popular is the fact that it is in full bloom all year round and is certainly one of the most beautiful attractions in Amsterdam. They sell buds, bulbs, blooms and bouquets as well as gardening equipment, clogs and other Amsterdam merchandise such as magnets and grow-your-own cannabis kits like ‘Cannabis in a can’.Some stalls are draped, head to toe in flowers. One even has them hanging from the roof. It is a sight to see. Luckily for hay fever sufferers like myself (and the other 66% of the population), the florists have air vents so the pollen isn’t too much of a nightmare, but maybe take some medication before visiting if you are allergy-prone.
